Forklift Capacity Explained: Why a 2.5t Forklift Can't Always Lift 2.5t

THE SHORT ANSWER
A forklift's rated capacity (e.g. 2,500 kg) applies at a standard 500 mm load centre at low lift height. Lift higher, carry longer or wider loads, or add attachments like a side shift, and the actual safe capacity — the residual capacity — drops, sometimes by 20–30%. Always check the machine's load chart at your real lift height with your real loads.
The number on the plate is a starting point
“2.5 tonne forklift” means 2,500 kg at a 500 mm load centre, at low height, with no attachments. Change any of those three conditions and the safe working load drops. This is the single most common — and most dangerous — misunderstanding in forklift selection.
The three things that eat your capacity
1. Load centre
The load centre is the distance from the fork face to the load’s centre of gravity. Standard rating assumes 500 mm — a typical 1,000 mm-deep pallet. Carry a 1.5 m-long crate and the centre of gravity moves out, the leverage increases, and capacity falls. Long timber, steel lengths, rolls and machinery are the classic cases.
2. Lift height
Capacity at 4.5 m is lower than at 1 m — the higher the mast extends, the lower the safe load. A machine that handles your heaviest pallet at ground level may not put it on your top beam. This is why we ask “what weight, at what height?” — the answer changes the machine.
3. Attachments
A side shift adds weight ahead of the axle and shifts the load forward — costing capacity. Hang-on side shifts cost more residual capacity than integrated units. Rotators, clamps and fork positioners cost more again. Every attachment must appear on the machine’s capacity plate.
A realistic example
A nominal 2.5 t machine with a 4.8 m triplex mast and hang-on side shift might have a residual capacity around 2,000–2,200 kg at full height — exact figures depend on the specific mast and attachment combination, which is why the manufacturer’s load chart for that configuration is the only number that counts. If your heaviest pallet is 2,300 kg and it needs to reach the top beam, that “2.5 t forklift” is the wrong machine — and the salesperson who didn’t ask about height did you no favours.
