Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Forklift Charging: What Your Site Needs

THE SHORT ANSWER

Most electric counterbalance forklifts charge from a three-phase outlet via an external charger. If your site only has standard single-phase power points, you need either a forklift with a built-in single-phase charger — like the EP EFL181, which uses a normal 15A socket — or an electrician to install a three-phase outlet.

The question that should come first (and usually comes last)

We’ve watched forklift deals die at the delivery stage because nobody asked about power until the charger didn’t fit the wall. It’s the first question in our quote form for a reason: your power supply decides which machines you can run.

Single-phase vs three-phase in one minute

  • Single-phase is what standard Australian power points deliver (230 V). A 15A single-phase outlet — the one with the wider earth pin — is common in workshops and light industrial units.
  • Three-phase (400 V) is the heavier supply used by industrial machinery. Outlets are the round five-pin type. Most warehouses have it; many small industrial units, retail back-of-houses and older buildings don’t.

The charger’s exact input current and breaker requirements are confirmed against your switchboard during the site assessment — 100A fast chargers in particular need the supply capacity checked, not assumed.

Only have standard outlets? Three options

  1. Choose the machine built for it. The EFL181 exists precisely for single-phase sites. If your loads are 1.5 t or under, this is the zero-electrical-work answer.
  2. Install a three-phase outlet. If the street supply supports it, a licensed electrician can install a three-phase outlet. Cost varies widely with switchboard capacity and cable runs — get a quote before committing to a machine, not after.
  3. Check your actual loads again. Many sites convinced they need a 2.5 t machine are moving 1.2 t pallets. The fit assessment sometimes solves the power problem by right-sizing the machine.

Lithium charging safety on site

WorkSafe Victoria’s guidance on lithium-ion battery safety applies to forklifts: provide a dedicated charging area separated from general work areas, use the manufacturer’s charger, and have an emergency plan. Lithium packs don’t gas like lead-acid — no ventilated battery room required — but the charging corner still needs to be set up properly. We cover this in the delivery handover, and the charging setup is documented in your agreement.
